Sekawnee started making music simply because he had a love for it, and because of the influence of his culture’s deep connections to song and dance. He found his passion for poetry at a very young age, and would pay close attention to everything that went into a song. Whether it was the lyrics, production, or mixing, he would break down some of his favourite songs. He soon decided to try making his own beats and rapping on them to see how it comes out. Sekawnee has always felt that making music was something he was destined to do.

Artists that helped inspire Sekawnee to start making music of his own are Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Travis Scott, and Quincy Jones. These artists really influenced him to start his own music career and Sekawnee really looks up to them in hopes of becoming as big as them one day.

Sekawnee’s recent song “1999 Freestyle” was made to be an introduction of himself where he talks about his life. “I wanted to make a more personal song and share some past experiences of who I am and how I got to where I am today,” says Sekawnee. The song is titled “1999 Freestyle” because that was the year he was born in. Sekawnee wanted to step out of his comfort zone and try something different, so he pushed himself to be more vulnerable with his lyrics to the point where he felt uncomfortable showing people the song. Sekawnee decided to not add any drums to the production so listeners would focus more on the lyrics and the overall vibe. The song is a freestyle so he didn’t write a single word down, everything was off the top of his head, punching in line by line.

Other than making music, Sekawnee is a semi-professional lacrosse player who started playing when he was only two years old. He currently plays in the Western Lacrosse Association and Arena Lacrosse League which is the highest level of lacrosse in Canada. Sekawnee is also the co-founder of the BYRC Recording Studio in Vancouver, Canada, that offers free recording, mixing, mastering and music production for youth between 13 to 24.

In about five years, Sekawnee sees himself as a very successful person accomplishing all of his goals and dreams. He hopes to see himself having a bigger platform where his voice is heard so that he can create more opportunities for the less fortunate people and the ones around him.

This is definitely an artist to watch and as he continues to make a path and name for himself, we can all say that we were here early!
